BECOMING A HOMESCHOOL STUDENT
Evergreen Hybrid Academy partners with homeschooling families by providing academic instruction and support. Because Pennsylvania law recognizes parents as the primary home educators, each family is responsible for complying with the state's homeschooling requirements. This is the link to the law, if details are needed.
Evergreen Hybrid Academy is here to support you through all steps to becoming a homeschool student by providing a "How to Homeschool" class for families.
Pennsylvania law requires the homeschooling parent or guardian to possess at least a high school diploma (or its equivalent). Additionally, neither the supervising parent nor any adult living in the household may have certain disqualifying criminal convictions. Families are encouraged to review the Pennsylvania Homeschool Law for complete details.
2. Submit Your Annual Affidavit
By August 1 of each school year, families must submit a notarized homeschool affidavit (or an unsworn declaration, if applicable under Pennsylvania law) along with educational objectives to their local school district superintendent.
Please list your home address and phone number on the affidavit. Evergreen Hybrid Academy serves as a homeschool support program and should not be listed as the supervising entity.
3. Students Receiving Special Education Services
If your child has been identified under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as requiring special education services (excluding gifted education), your homeschool program must be approved by a Pennsylvania-certified special education teacher or a licensed clinical or school psychologist. This written approval must be submitted with your annual affidavit.
Evergreen Hybrid Academy can assist families in locating an approved professional if needed.
4. Required Elementary Subjects (K–6)
Pennsylvania law requires instruction in the following subjects at the elementary level: English (reading, writing, and spelling), Mathematics, Science, Geography, United States and Pennsylvania history, Civics, Safety education, including fire safety, Health and physiology, Physical education, Music, Art
Evergreen Hybrid Academy's curriculum is designed to help families meet these requirements.
5. Attendance Requirements
Students must complete either 180 instructional days or 900 instructional hours at the elementary level.
Evergreen Hybrid Academy maintains attendance records for instruction completed through our program. Families are responsible for recording instructional time completed at home or through other educational activities. We have attendance records and a schedule to help families document days.
Pennsylvania requires standardized testing in grades 3, 4, and 5. Test results must be included in the student's annual portfolio.
Evergreen Hybrid Academy offers standardized testing each school year, although families may choose another approved testing provider if preferred.
Each student must maintain a portfolio that includes a reading log, attendance records, samples of work from each required subject area, standardized test results (when applicable)
Families are encouraged to add work samples throughout the school year. Evergreen Hybrid Academy provides access to a qualified portfolio evaluator who will review the portfolio at the end of each academic year.
8. End-of-Year Evaluation
By June 30, parents must submit the evaluator's certification stating that the student has received an appropriate education to their local school district superintendent.
Evergreen Hybrid Academy will provide families with the completed evaluation documentation following the annual portfolio review.
